Infections acquired as a result of a hospital stay are called nosocomial infections and it is estimated that between 5-15% of all hospital patients acquire some sort of nosocomial infection. With the increase in hospital running costs and the increased demand on hospital facilities, the emphasis is more and more on reducing patient stay times in hospital. One of the key areas in reducing the average patient stay time after surgery is to minimize Post-operative infection. From the designers’ point of view, the critical areas that will affect the infection rates in the theatres are:

1. The layout of the department, which should be designed in such a way as to provide clear segregation between clean/ and dirty area.
2. The selection of construction materials that are crevice free, easily cleaned and not able to support bacterial growth.
3. The selection of services and its termination units.
4. By the reduction of infection carried out by particles in the Air supply system.

Quality: The steel Pre-fabricated Panel or Cori an Joint less Surface System provides a standard of finish far higher than can be achieved with conventional construction.

Durability: The all steel construction is far more durable than brick or plasterboard walls. Plaster finishes become brittle and crack, are susceptible to building movement and the surface can be broken by impact from trolleys and equipment. Steel is virtually indestructible and will flex under impact or under building movement.

Flexibility: The structural steel frame of the theatre and the steel wall and ceiling panels make the addition of equipment at a later date a simple half-day operation that does not cause noise or dust. Thus avoiding the prolonged theatre close downs usually required when fitting new equipment into old conventionally built theatres.
Shape: The octagonal shape of the Operating room, which is difficult to construct with conventional building methods, has many advantages: easier to keep clean as there are no acute angles, no "dead" corners from an air movement point of view and better light diffusion due to reflection of the angled corners, the octagonal shape reduces wasted space, as the corners of rectangular theatres are not normally used, better access as there are 8 walls that can be used to fit doors.

Speed: Pre-fabricated components reduce site time, in a critical area of construction, thus reducing overall project time.

Maintenance: Modular theatres are designed for ease of maintenance. Little maintenance is required, and this can be carried out from outside the theatre, without disruption. The wall finish will last for approximately 15 years, and can then be re-applied in 4 days.
